Q: What is LINC?

A: LINC stands for Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada and is a program created for immigrants who know some or no English.

Q: What do I need to be eligible for the LINC program?

A: You are eligible if you:

  • Are 18 years of age or older.
  • Are a permanent resident of Canada, Convention Refugee, or legally allowed to remain in Canada.
  • Are an adult living in London, Middlesex, Oxford, Elgin, Huron or Lambton Counties.

Q: Which papers should I bring to the assessment centre?

A: Clients must bring their original immigration papers to the assessment appointment.

  • Government Assisted Refugee

Q: Who are NOT eligible for LINC classes?

A: Canadian citizens, refugee claimants and visitors are not eligible for LINC but might be able to attend ESL programs across the Region. Please contact the nearest school for more information.

A: Remember, language classes are available for every adult in your family, not just the person who may be looking for work.

Q: Why are classes free?

A: Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada program is funded by the Government of Canada through the Department of Citizenship and Immigration in cooperation with school boards, community colleges, and immigrant and community organizations. They work together to offer language training at no cost for you.

A: LINC offers many programs to meet your needs and schedule. Morning, afternoon and evening classes are available

A: LINC offers both full- and part-time classes to suit your needs, and some centres offer free child care while you attend classes

Q: Does LINC offer Daycare?

A: We offer free childminding for children of our LINC students. Please note that we only have a limited number of spaces available, on a first-come, first-served basis.

Q: What is an Assessment Centre?

A: An Assessment Centre is the place where professional and trained people can evaluate your language training needs. Whether you live in London, Middlesex, Oxford, Elgin, Lambton or Huron Counties, we can refer you to the right LINC classes for your needs.

Q: Why do I need to be assessed?

A: An assessment interview determines your current eligibility and language skills and then matches your needs with the appropriate language training option.

Q: What happen during the assessment?

A: During the appointment a confirmation of client eligibility and a Canadian Language Benchmarks test takes place.

Q: What is assessed during the test?

A: The test assesses English proficiency on the scale from Benchmark 1 to Benchmark 8.

  • tests English Listening / Speaking through one-on-one interview
  • tests Reading by means of passage and response to short answer / multiple choice questions
  • tests Writing by means of authentic, life-applicable tasks

Q: What is the length of assessment?

A: The assessment may last from one and a half to four hours, depending on the level of the client and the type of test being used.
