What's Your Level?

Citizenship and Immigration Canada, Ontario Region has developed the LINC 1-4 and 5-7 Curriculum Guidelines for use in LINC and other programs intended for adult immigrants. These curriculum guidelines are consistent with the Canadian Language Benchmarks.

To find out what's your level is very easy:

  1. Get in contact with either of the Assessment Centres located in London or Sarnia
  2. Make an appointment for your assessment
  3. Go to your assessment (remember to bring your original documents)
  4. Start your classes and reach a better future!

Remember: It has no cost for you.

Canadian Language Benchmark Assessment


A task-based assessment instrument

  • Assesses English proficiency on the scale from Benchmark 1 to Benchmark 8
  • Tests English Listening / Speaking through one-on-one interview
  • Tests Reading by means of passage and response to short answer / multiple choice questions
  • Tests Writing by means of authentic, life-applicable tasks

Assessment Overview


Listening / Speaking

  • A progressive interview where each client is engaged in a series of tasks conducted by a certified assessor
  • Task types include:
    • follow and respond to simple questions and instructions
    • take part in a short conversation
  • Approximate time: 15 minutes


Reading

  • A series of tasks in two test packages: Stage I (Benchmarks 1 - 4), Stage II (Benchmarks 5 - 8)
  • Response format: multiple choice and short answers
  • Approximate time: 45 minutes


Writing

  • A series of tasks in two test stages: Stage I (Benchmarks 1 - 4), Stage II (Benchmarks 5 - 8)
  • Can be administered individually or in a group
  • Approximate time: 45 minutes
